Ford EcoSport: Revival in Philippines Possible, India Unlikely

New Delhi. When the Ford EcoSport made its debut in the Philippines in 2013, it arguably set the stage for the subcompact budget crossover segment in the country. It was among the first vehicles priced under P1 million that offered substantial ground clearance, quickly becoming a favourite among buyers.

Similarly, the Indian market was one of the initial recipients of the EcoSport, with production based at Ford India’s Chennai plant.

Available in India in six trims—Ambiente, Trend, Titanium, Titanium+, Sports, and Thunder edition—the EcoSport offered a choice between a 1.5-litre Ti-VCT Dragon series petrol engine and a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine.

Transmission options included a five-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic for the petrol variant. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine was discontinued following the upgrade to BS6 emission standards.

Possible Revival by 2025

According to Spanish motoring website Motor.Es, the Ford EcoSport could be revived and make its debut by 2025. The new model is expected to be manufactured at Ford’s Valencia plant in Spain, potentially positioning it as a rival to the Dacia Duster. In Europe, the Duster holds a significant share of the small, budget crossover market, a segment that Ford aims to penetrate.

The Facelift and Market Position

In 2017, the EcoSport received a facelift with 80% of its parts sourced from India. Although it may not have been the segment leader in subsequent years, the EcoSport remained a consistent seller for both Ford India and Ford Philippines. Despite its popularity, the model was eventually discontinued in both markets.

Current Market Scenario in the Philippines

Ironically, Ford Philippines no longer has an affordable small crossover in its lineup. Today, the segment is dominated by numerous models, primarily from Chinese manufacturers, with the Toyota Raize leading the sales charts. However, the EcoSport might soon make a triumphant return.

Current Development Status

As of now, there have been no sightings of prototypes on the road, nor any official statements from Ford. This suggests that a reveal is likely slated for mid to late 2025. If Ford is indeed working on the all-new EcoSport, it is managing to keep the development process tightly under wraps.

The budget crossover market remains robust globally, and it is unlikely that Ford will allow its competitors to dominate this segment unchallenged. Whether the new model will carry the EcoSport badge or adopt a new name remains to be seen. For now, enthusiasts and potential buyers can only wait and watch as Ford gears up to potentially re-enter the subcompact crossover arena with a renewed contender.

Future Specifications and Design

The next-generation EcoSport could be offered with hybrid powertrain options, although low-displacement turbocharged engines are also a possibility. Recent patent photos suggest that the new model might retain some design elements from the last iteration.
