Causes and Relief for Mouth Ulcers

New Delhi. Mouth ulcers are usually small, painful sores or lesions that develop on the soft lining of the mouth. Anyone can get mouth ulcers and they are usually harmless. There is no definite cause of these ulcers however, there can be some factors which can cause mouth ulcers.

Generally, most mouth ulcers heal on their own or with over-the-counter (OTC) products within one to two weeks. But if they last longer than three weeks and are recurrent in nature or extremely painful, they may require medical attention. There are some reasons which can cause mouth ulcers as follows: 

Stress

Stress can be a major cause of mouth ulcers. Actually, as soon as you come under stress, your hormonal health deteriorates. Stress hormones increase in the body which can cause ulcers in the mouth. Apart from this, excessive stress and anxiety disturbs the digestion and makes the stomach hot. Due to this, ulcers appear in the mouth.

Hormonal disturbance

Disturbance of hormonal health can be a major reason for this. As the estrogen hormone gets imbalanced in the body, it causes ulcers in the mouth. This can be seen more in women during periods and pregnancy.

How to get relief from them? 

Salt Water Rinse: Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Rinse your mouth with this solution several times a day.

Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste. Apply this paste to the ulcer to reduce pain and inflammation.

Honey: Honey has natural antibacterial and healing properties. Apply a small amount of honey directly to the ulcer several times a day.

Coconut Oil: Apply a small amount of coconut oil to the ulcer. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties can help soothe the sore.

Aloe Vera: Apply aloe vera gel directly to the ulcer to promote healing and reduce pain.

Fast foods

Some foods, especially foods adulterated with artificial colors, can cause mouth ulcers. Apart from this, chocolate, spicy food, coffee, peanuts, almonds, strawberries, cheese, tomatoes and some fast foods can also cause it.

Toothpaste

If your toothpaste contains very active ingredients then it can cause ulcers in the mouth.  Especially toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate can also cause mouth ulcers. So, take care of all these things and be a little cautious about these things. You will not have problems with mouth ulcers.
