Punjab News: High Concentration of artificial sweetener Saccharine found in cake linked to Punjab Girl's tragic death

Chandigarh. Authorities have disclosed that a chocolate cake, believed to be the cause behind the tragic death of a 10-year-old girl in Punjab, was found to contain a high concentration of the artificial sweetener saccharine, prompting investigations and raising concerns over food safety.

The unfortunate incident took place on March 24 when the family fell ill after consuming a chocolate cake ordered online from 'Cake Kanha', a bakery in Patiala, to celebrate the girl's birthday. Shortly after the celebration, the young girl, identified as Manvi, and her family members began experiencing symptoms including vomiting and dryness of the mouth.

According to District Health Officer Dr. Vijay Jindal, a sample of the cake was collected for analysis. The results revealed a significant presence of saccharine, a synthetic compound known for its intense sweetness. While saccharine is approved for use in food and beverages in small quantities, elevated levels can cause rapid spikes in blood glucose levels, leading to potential health risks.

Tragically, despite efforts to stabilise her with oxygen at the hospital, Manvi succumbed to the effects of the poisoning. Following the incident, authorities have initiated legal action against 'Cake Kanha', with a fine expected to be imposed. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the bakery's owner.

The incident has stirred public outrage, with a video circulating on social media showing moments of celebration as Manvi joyfully cut the cake with her family shortly before the tragic turn of events. The grieving family has alleged that the cake contained poisonous substances, sparking demands for stricter regulations to uphold food safety standards.
