WhatsApp Calling Gets a Boost: Screen Sharing, More Participants, and Improved Quality

New Delhi. WhatsApp is bringing three major updates to the platform for all devices. These updates aim to make the call “even bigger and better” and will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Since we launched Calling on WhatsApp in 2015, we have continually improved the feature, including introducing group calling, video calling and support for multiple platforms, the company said.

Screen Sharing with Audio

This feature is great for watching videos with friends and family, and users can now share audio when sharing their screen.

WhatsApp says users can now join video calls with up to 32 people across all devices.

WhatsApp receives the Mlow codec

To improve the quality of voice and video calls as well as call reliability, WhatsApp’s parent company Meta recently launched the Mlow codec. This codec improves noise and echo cancellation and makes calls on mobile devices clearer.

“Even if you have a poor network connection or an older device, you will experience clearer sound overall,” the company said.

Speaker Spotlight

A third update to make it easier to see who is speaking. When there are many participants on a video call, it can be difficult to keep track of who is speaking at any given time. In a future update, speakers will automatically be highlighted and displayed first on the screen.

“We continue to improve calling on WhatsApp so you can have the highest quality private calls no matter where you are in the world,” the company added.
