Who is Pragya Misra, India’s first OpenAI government relations head

New Delhi. Pragya Misra previously worked at Truecaller AB and Meta Platforms Inc. and will start her tenure at OpenAI by the end of the month, as per sources.

Giving a shape to Artificial Intelligence, ChatGPT developer OpenAI hired its first employee in India. OpenAI is expanding its team to India shows global reach and development in AI. Appointing a government relations head just as the country votes in a new administration that will shape artificial intelligence regulations in the world’s most populous nation.

Who is Pragya Misra

Pragya Misra, 39, previously headed public affairs at Stockholm-traded contact verification firm Truecaller, which is among India’s one of the companies. She also worked at Meta Platforms Inc., where she led WhatsApp’s campaign against misinformation in 2018.

OpenAI, which is having tough competition from the likes of Alphabet’s Google, is developing a model based on countries' requirements. Reportedly, the product will be able to handle more than 100 local languages across the speech and text, which will widen the customer base.

According to the sources, the Microsoft Corporation-backed company has appointed Pragya Misra to lead public policy affairs and partnerships in India. Misra, 39, previously worked at Truecaller AB and Meta Platforms Inc. and will start her tenure at OpenAI by the end of the month.

The hiring of Misra not only highlights the AI company’s effort to push favorable rules as governments around the world but will also regulate the rapidly developing technology. Notably, India is among one of the fastest-growing economies with 1.4 billion people and massive opportunities for tech companies.
